my router is blocking connections to ftp servers

Or maybe it's my ISP, I'm not sure. But when I try to connect to any ftp, whether in IE or File Zilla, I get an error. If I enter the correct username and password into IE, it repeatedly drops me back in that same edit box where I already entered the credentials, and refuses to connect. In File Zilla, it simply tries to connect until it times out. I was doing a google search, and I saw a forum where someone was talking about this problem, and they said they fixed it by going into their network configuration, and then their ISP's firewall settings, and disabling ftp's being blocked. So, I went into my wireless configuration wizard, and have found no such thing. I think i've looked everywhere in the settings. Unless it's called something else, I'm just not seeing it.
I'm using Windows 7, and my ISP is Frontier, not that that probably means anything to anyone since it's a crappy small company that apparently blocks connections to ftp servers by default. As I said, I'm connected wirelessly. I'm not sure of the name of my router, although I'm sure I could find out if that would help. I figured I'd ask here because I'm getting frustrated, and I have reasons why I have to connect to an ftp server, so I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

How old is your router? When I got a new computer with windows 7, I didn't realize that my router was too slow and too old to work well with windows 7. It actually let in a virus when I was in a restore. I got a new router from radio shack for about $49. My router was 10 years old. Hope this helps.

I can suggest you to reset your modem and try again? just as a trial and error basis.

Hi,
I'll tell a little more about what I did last night, if it will help at all. I enabled DMZ. I tried turning off my router's firewall. Then I remembered that when I had my old computer, which ran xp, I didn't have this problem, yet it was the same router. I think this router is about 4 years old now. Anyway, I went into control panel, and into Windows firewall, and allowed port 21 access to the internet, but still no go. I even disabled Windows Firewall to see if that was the problem. I also checked to make sure that passive mode was enabled in IE, which it was. I tried it in active mode as well, even though I knew if anything would help, it would be the fact that it was in passive mode since I've heard that dsl connections often have problems with ftp transfers in active mode. So now I am completely out of ideas. I should also mention that after configuring the router settings I rebooted the router. Is there something obvious I'm missing here?

have you ever checked up whether is there any firmware update for your router? try that option as well.

Let's keep on trying with various options and if none of them is giving success, give your routewr to the kids for their experiment and go for another one. lol.
